Renowned mixologists are reinterpreting the beloved red from the Tuscan coast, proving its place in the world of contemporary cocktails.
Thanks to its surprising versatility, Morellino di Scansano is taking center stage this summer, moving beyond the traditional wine glass to elegantly, authentically, and freshly embrace the world of mixology. Three signature cocktails – ReWine and Morellino Carousel, conceived by bartender Julian Biondi, and House of Moris by Andrea Picci in collaboration with the Moris Farm company – present a new perspective on this Sangiovese from the Tuscan coast, positioning it as a stylish and innovative interpreter of the summer season.
“Morellino di Scansano is a wine with a strong identity, yet it engages with the present and with new languages. Its versatility allows us to express its character through the creativity of mixology, without ever distorting its essence. In fact, it is precisely in these new forms that its ability to interpret contemporary tastes emerges, while remaining deeply connected to its territory of origin,” comments Bernardo Guicciardini Calamai, president of the Morellino di Scansano Consortium.
ReWine: A Tribute to Morellino Riserva
Created by Florentine bartender Julian Biondi, ReWine is a tribute to the most important structure of Morellino, in its Riserva version. The depth of the wine marries with whiskey and Angostura bitters, creating a cocktail that is both elegant and accessible. Its strength lies in its ability to be served with ease in different contexts, both in summer and in the colder months. Instead of the traditional cocktail glass, it is served in a low tumbler with a single ice cube and garnished with a marasca cherry. The result is a drink of great balance, capable of highlighting the gastronomic vocation of Morellino even outside of traditional dining.
Morellino Carousel: A Futurist Inspiration
In Morellino Carousel, Julian Biondi draws inspiration from the “Giostra d’Alcool” (Alcohol Carousel), a provocative and visionary recipe from Italian Futurism. This cocktail keeps Morellino as its pulsating heart, building around it a structure made of a bitter and red fruit cordial and a touch of soda. The result is a surprisingly balanced and complex drink, with a moderate alcohol content and a personality that makes it perfect for an original summer aperitif, yet rooted in a precise and conscious cultural vision.
House of Moris: A Mediterranean Breeze
Finally, House of Moris is born from the creativity of barman Andrea Picci, who brings together the freshness of lemon juice, the aromatic notes of rosemary syrup, and the elegance of Moris Farm gin. The Morellino is added on top as a final touch, enhancing the drink’s profile while maintaining its own identity. A sprig of rosemary completes the olfactory experience, evoking the Mediterranean landscape of the coast. It is a cocktail that speaks of the territory but with a young and international language, designed for those who love freshness without sacrificing character.
This encounter between wine and cocktails thus becomes an opportunity to talk about a constantly evolving denomination, ready to step outside the usual communication channels to conquer a new, transversal, and curious audience. An audience that, through a summer cocktail enjoyed at sunset, can discover the charm of a wine that has its roots in the Maremma, but looks to the world with an open and contemporary spirit.
