From Turbiana to Chardonnay: Ottella’s Distinctive Wines of Lake Garda

A journey through the heart of Lugana reveals a legacy of winemaking excellence

The glacial soils and sun-drenched slopes surrounding Lake Garda provide the ideal backdrop for exceptional viticulture. It is here, in the historic Lugana region, that Ottella has cultivated its legacy since 1905. This family-run estate, now in its fourth generation, produces wines that are a true reflection of their origin. From the single-vineyard expression of Le Creete to the complex Molceo Riserva and the pure Blanc de Blanc Metodo Classico, Ottella’s iconic wines capture the essence of this unique terroir.

Le Creete Lugana DOC Single Vineyard Ottella

Crafted from Turbiana (Trebbiano di Lugana) grapes, Le Creete embodies the single-vineyard concept, accentuating the characteristics imparted by the white clay soils. This wine originates from the oldest vines, cultivated with low yields. The result is a distinctive wine of immediate intensity, marked by aromatic finesse and remarkable persistence. Le Creete benefits from extended aging to fully express its potential.

Molceo Lugana DOC Riserva Ottella

Also produced from Turbiana grapes, Molceo is a selection of the best cuvées, resulting in a limited number of bottles. This wine is distinguished by its elegance and complexity. Maturation spans over 24 months, utilizing a combination of materials: wood, concrete, and stainless steel. This, along with extended bottle aging, contributes to the wine’s harmonious character. Molceo presents elegant notes of white flowers and citrus, with subtle hints of sulfur. The palate is complex and persistent, supported by a compelling salinity. With further aging, it develops the characteristic hydrocarbon notes typical of the Turbiana varietal.

Blanc de Blanc Brut Metodo Classico Ottella

Made from Chardonnay grapes, this Metodo Classico is produced using the SoloUva method. This unique approach involves producing bottle-fermented wines without the conventional addition of cane sugar to induce secondary fermentation or for dosage after disgorgement. Instead of sucrose (cane or beet sugar), the must from the same grapes, naturally rich in sugar, is used. The result is an effervescence of refinement and purity.

Ottella: A Legacy of Terroir

Ottella’s history began in 1905 in Località Ottella, Peschiera del Garda, founded by Lodovico Montresor. Today, the fourth generation, represented by Francesco and Michele, continues to elevate the estate’s reputation worldwide. In the 1960s, Ottella began its growth trajectory, establishing itself as an iconic producer in the Lugana region.

In 2013, the company’s expansion necessitated a new facility. This led to the creation of a contemporary winery designed to embody the estate’s values: a deep connection to the vineyards, the landscape, and the arts. Wine is showcased alongside paintings and sculptures—a family tradition. Today, Ottella encompasses 90 hectares in the most prestigious areas of the Lugana denomination, recognized and celebrated internationally for the quality of its wines.
